New "DCS" control system selection

I am seeking cost effective solutions for replacing my Rosemount System 3 control system.

I have decided that using remote I/O multiplexers for the HART smart analog and 120VAC Discrete I/O provides several significant advantages. "Home run" twisted pair cables from local area junction boxes would be replaced with an open protocol, high speed industrial Ethernet like Profinet, or Modbus TCP/IP to a server/HMI. While researching this over the last 6 months, I have discovered several multiplexer/controller solutions that are are rated for Class I, Group II environments.

The current list that I believe are strong contenders include Delta V, MTL MOST (Now GE Fanuc), Siemens S7 & PCS7 and Yokogawa Stardom FCN. I invite other suggestions. There are numerous features that I would like to see in the "open" system such as OPC or OPC UA, redundant hardware, easy to configure and troubleshoot, an inexpensive historian attached to the company LAN and minimum Licensing fees. I am inviting both pro and con comments, either directly and via this forum, on selection of a new cost effective "DCS" that would be a true distributed control system.

I feel this open discussion could also provide help to others with older control systems. My I/O count is over 1000 points. A spreadsheet comparing features of potential candidates would be of strong interest.

As water and wastewater treatment plants grow in both size and complexity, so does the need to control equipment that make up the unit-operations of that plant. Distributed Control System (DCS) is a control system method that is spread, or distributed, among several different unit processes. These processes may be related, as in a water treatment facility, or unrelated, as in a manufacturing plant where many different products are fabricated.

The DCS is typically a hard-wired system and exists within finite boundaries, such as a process plant or within a factory. Wired systems are reliable and are well suited for the typical process environment where flexibility is not an issue. Wireless systems are starting to become popular and hold the promise of improved flexibility in both physical and logical layout of the facility. An entire process may be retooled to the extent that several parts of the process will be physically moved or removed. Using wireless, system reconfiguration is as simple as disabling the station address or downloading the suitable database.

Whether wired or wireless, distributed control systems offer the advantage of centralized control, while retaining the capability of distributed, or local control. True distributed control systems use localized control, which is in turn controlled by the operator located at a central location. Distributed Control Systems consist of the following:

This morning I got a chance to sit down with the guys at Samsung Semiconductor, who among other things, specialize in solid state drives. We had a good chat about the pros and cons of SSDs — the cost to manufacture versus the savings in heat production, energy use, and above all, faster performance.

To sum it up: business notebooks will soon be all SSD. Or, to quote Steve Weinger, SC’s senior marketing manager: “SSD-only is the new wave of 2009.”

Why? According to them, business users shouldn’t necessarily need to store music and movies and the like, so they won’t really need enormous capacity. (Technically, they should be saving things to the server.)

To show the differences in the performance between the two, the company had a setup running two Windows Vista machines through various paces — closing and opening Windows, booting up and shutting down, and so forth. It’s pretty clear which machine won:

The new Nikon D90 digital SLR camera has a feature called Live View, which means you can frame pictures using the screen instead of the viewfinder. (This is, of course, dead common on snapshot cameras, but they don't have a mirror blocking the way to the sensor.) And as David Pogue points out in The New York Times, this means it's the first DSLR that can shoot video:

Vudu Podcast: Should Pay TV Players Fight the Leading OTT High-Def Content Provider, Or Join 'Em?

We had a chance recently to catch up with VUDU Executive Vice President Edward Lichty to capture his views on the role Vudu is playing in fostering the burgeoning over the top (OTT) video market, as well as his perspective on the market in general. Click here to listen to podcast.

Vudu has certainly been making a lot of noise lately. They seem to be at the forefront of many of the major innovations in the OTT space. First, while many skeptics thought the delivery of quality Internet HD on demand could not be done with any kind of a reasonable user experience, Vudu has embraced high-def, with 2,000 of their 15,000 movie titles available in up to 1080p resolution, more than any other OTT provider and more than the total Blu-ray library, according to Vudu. As a result, Vudu’s $150 box (they also sell a higher end $500 box) boasts the highest revenue per subscriber of any VoD service, with around $20 per month collected from customers. This is high compared to cable, a fact that Edward pins on the fact that, for cable, VoD is a service primarily used to buttress the value of their subscription-based service, as opposed to the core transactional business that drives the Vudu user experience. Edward also chalks this up to Vudu’s superior selection, high quality 5.1 sound, convenience, and ease of use. (By the way, for those following the protocol wars for HD video distribution in the home, Edward made it clear that even WiFi G is enough for them to deliver HD content in real-time with delays of 1 second or less. Of course, a mix of VoD and streaming live TV would be more taxing.)

Vudu is not afraid to try out new business models. Last week, the company announced a deal with Disney’s Buena Vista Home Entertainment for the first major download-to-own service for movies. “I think this is another example of Hollywood endorsing Vudu as a premier HD platform,” he said.

Taoglas Launch First LTE Antenna

today released the first LTE and WiMax antenna solutions for the M2M market. There are two antenna solutions: embedded and external. The FXP400 and FXP100 are ultra wideband, embedded antennas. They offer the best market efficiency of over 70% for WiMax (2100~4320MHz) and LTE (690-940 MHz and 1720-3130 MHz). The LTEA.4000 external solution for packaged M2M 3G/4G LTE markets has an efficiency of over 40% and connects externally to terminals and LTE equipment. These antennas will be showcased at the Taoglas booth #551 in the M2M Zone Pavilion at CTIA.

Both solutions build on Taoglas’ strong product line and experience with cellular and 3G antennas. M2M manufacturers developing devices for the new fourth generation networks in automotive, telematics, metering, telemedical and femtocells (home networks) will benefit from antennas they can use in developing LTE and WiMax prototypes. Samsung BD-P1600 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

The amount of data used for HD content takes up much greater space than that of Standard Definition (SD) content. From that need came Blu-ray discs (BD). Blu-ray's name comes from the blue colored laser used to read the discs. Data is stored on the disc by burning tiny pits in the surface, basically the same as with CDs and DVDs but with many, many, more pits to a given area. A Blu-ray's disc capacity is enormous - where a standard DVD holds 4.7GB of data, a standard BD will hold a huge 25GB of data and a dual layer BD a whopping 50GB. There are a few offshoots of Blu-ray technology, lower cost, lower capacity, BD5 and BD9 discs (basically recording Blu-ray format data onto a special DVD using a different colored red laser) There are also mini-sized BD's. Recordable Blu-ray discs are available as well for use with burners.

High quality video and sound - Think of the difference between DVD's and Blu-ray discs as the same as putting on your reading glasses to read a book. Everything looks sharper and more in focus on Blu-ray than with DVDs.

My first experience playing back a Blu-ray disc with the BD-P1600, on a 1080P HDTV, was nothing short of nirvana. It was similar to my first experience listening to a very expensive audiophile system. The amount of detail and realism can't be mentioned in the same breath (take a breath here) as your average home stereo. Its the same with Blu-ray - there is no comparison to Standard Definition TV or any DVD, the picture quality with Blu-ray just blows it away.

It doesn't end with the image on the screen. I was very pleased with the audio coming from the BD-P1600, which can take advantage of several of Dolby Lab's sound technologies. Dolby's True HD decodes lossless multichannel sound (High Definition sound output). The BD-P1600 also supports the competing audio technology, DTS HD. I haven't put the audio section of the Samsung through extensive listening tests yet because I'm still putting together my home theater system but I can tell you that the sound through my Grado and Sennheiser headphones was wonderful. Music with either my small Bose Companion 2 Series II speakers or the slightly bigger M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 speakers was at times an almost three dimensional listening experience, even though I was listening with just two speakers.

Internet connectivity - With the new Samsung BD-P1600 you're given additional features by hooking this player to the Internet. You can do this one of two ways, via Ethernet cable to your router or with Samsung's optional Wireless USB Adapter (WIS09ABGN) I chose to use the Ethernet hookup for the most reliable, and fastest, data path.

Being able to access the Internet opens a whole new world of features with the new BD-P1600's BD-Live 2.0 compliance. Now when you play back certain Blu-ray titles there are additional menu options. You can download additional content, access a website with games and more. Some of this content is even upgraded after the release of the disc so even older titles in your collection could have new content available.

Netflix - The Netflix feature built into the player enables you to watch more than 12,000 titles of on demand movies and TV shows. More are becoming available all the time. A very minor drawback is that you have to arrange your Netflix Cue using your computer and Netflix's website.

Right now Netflix's video on demand selection is mostly not up to HDTV quality. They do have some selections tagged as HD, and the image quality is better than their standard selections, but still not able to compete with the image quality 720P or 1080P brings you. As cable companies offer faster speeds I think this will change and we'll see true 720P and then 1080P service. We may not have to wait that long for it either.

Pandora - With the BD-P1600 you can also use my favorite place to listen to streamed music online, Pandora. Again you have to go to Pandora's website to set up your account and individual stations, which is dead simple to do, then listen to them at will using your TV/home theater system.

Setup with either Netflix or Pandora is also simple. If you don't already have an account with Netflix then by all means sign up for their service. I pay $12 a month for unlimited Blu-ray discs, one at a time, but that includes unlimited on demand video. Pandora's service is free (for now). Go to the Pandora website, create an account and set up your stations. Then back to your Samsung BD player, remove any discs you might have in the tray - the screen will show the Netflix/Pandora icons. Click on one. The first time you use it, a setup screen will pop up giving you a series of numbers that you type in at Netflix's or Pandora's website that ties your machine with your account. That's it! You're done and ready to start watching on demand movies or listening to music.

USB - There's a USB slot on the front and back of the player. The rear one would normally be used with Samsung's Wireless USB dongle. The front slot can be used to show JPEG photos and play back MP3's.

HDMI 1.3 - One of the best features of newer HD equipment is their use of HDMI cables for connecting components. Instead of a snake's nest of wires behind your home theater system that takes you hours to figure out which cable goes to what connection, HDMI simplifies everything by incorporating your video and sound connections into one wire. It also allows for the best image quality, 1080p. Now the only other cables running behind your player are the ones for networking and AC power. (and with the next update to the HDMI specifications, the networking cable will disappear). HDMI makes hooking up your system a breeze and I completed my hookup in a matter of a minute or so. Most of that was going back to the manual to see which of the 4 HDMI slots on my new Samsung LCD TV I should use for the various devices. Now running from the back of the player are the power cord, HDMI cable and Ethernet Cable - that's it. If I'd gone with the Wireless USB dongle to connect to my home network I'd only have the HDMI cable and power cord.

Setup
In the box is the player, remote and batteries, RCA type AV cable, user manual, quick start guide.

As I mentioned above setup is very easy, even setting up Netflix and Pandora. All-in-all I think it took me a total of 15 minutes, and I wasn't rushing. Plug in a couple of cables, set up accounts and you're ready to go.

Network
If you decide to use Samsung's Wireless USB device to access your network, setup will probably be the most time consuming thing you'll have to do since you'll have to use the remote to input your router's password of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters. You enter the data by using the remote to move a cursor around on the onscreen keyboard. By using an Ethernet cable you bypass the need for the password.

Upgradeable firmware
The Samsung BD-P1600 is one of a few players on the market with a user upgradable firmware. What's so special about being able to do this yourself? Unfortunately there are some discs out there that don't work with all players. Being upgradeable the Samsung can add future compatibility with those discs. I've already upgraded my player's firmware in the first month of ownership.

Here we come to one major gripe I had with the player. Downloading my first firmware update via the player's Ethernet connection took more than 30 minutes, and thats for a file that was only 65MB in size, and this was done over a broadband cable connection. Normally such a download would have taken a minute or so. I have to believe the slow speed happens because of Samsung's server. Anyway, the firmware upgrade itself is simple to do; follow onscreen instructions and that's it.

Using your computer you can also download firmware upgrades to a USB memory stick and transfer that over to the player to do your upgrade. I'll try that next time there's an upgrade.

TIP - remember to remove any disc in the player before you try to upgrade your firmware.

Final Thoughts
Sales of BD players are way up over last year (by almost 75%) most likely pushed by the drop in street price of the players over that same time frame. A couple months ago I bought the player I'm using for this review. Normally the BD-P1600 sells for $299 but I happened on a great sale on Amazon and purchased the player for $215 including five Blu-ray movies, which effectively dropped the cost down to the $150-$160 range. It pays to do a little searching before you buy anything nowadays.

If you have a HD TV already or will buy one soon, especially if it can display 1080P video, then by all means upgrade your disc player to the BD-P1600. You will not regret it.

I've quickly become a Blu-ray junkie because of the outstanding picture quality of the BD-P1600. Its faster loading time is a godsend compared to other units. All Blu-ray players are not created equal and the playback quality of this Samsung is among the best of what's out there.

Wish list
Mostly I wish for the controls on the player itself to be back-lit. As they are now its more like trying to read Braille unless there's really good room light illuminating the face. This is a minor gripe since most people will access the player via remote. I like the drop down front panel, it keeps dust out of the player, but it can cause some hassle if you have to use a IR repeater.

It would have been nice for Samsung to include a 6' Ethernet cable. I'd rather Samsung had included a 6' Ethernet cable than the RCA AV cable. Most people already have the latter.

Glow in the dark buttons help, but back-lit would have been better.

Most of the other items on my wish list have to do with the remote. It would be nice if it had back-lit buttons like its sibling TV remote from the Samsung LN40B650. There are some glow-in-the-dark buttons (play, fast forward, stop, pause) but you need to have the remote under a light for awhile for them to be useful in a dark room and then only for awhile since they eventually fade.

Button layout on the player's remote is actually better than the TV's remote. That's a lucky thing because of the Samsung's Anynet+ feature the player remote can handle most of the chores of the bigger TV remote (and vice versa) so I've ended up using it more often of the two. Another nice touch with using AnyNet+ is that when you turn on the player then my Samsung LN40B650 also turns on and sets the input for the BD player.

What is a PLC?

Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) continue to evolve as new technologies are added to their capabilities. The PLC started out as a replacement for banks of relays. Gradually, various math and logic manipulation functions were added. Today they are the brains of the vast majority of automation, processes and special machines. PLCs now incorporate smaller cases, faster CPUs, networking and various internet technologies.

Scan the bar code.
Send the data to the PC.
PC decodes the bar code.
PC looks up the resulting information from the database.
Move the data to the PC communications port.
Send the information to the PLC across a serial communication connection.
Move the data from the PLC communications buffer to the PLC program memory and use it (in some cases).

Using a PLC with an internal relational database reduces this to four steps:

Scan the bar code.
Send the data to the PLC.
PLC decodes the bar code.
PLC looks up the resulting information from the internal relational database and use it.

Using a PLC with an internal relational database eliminates the weak link of the communications from the PC to the PLC. A PC will usually perform the database lookup faster than a PLC. However, moving the data from the PC database across a serial network connection (usually limited to 19.2k baud) rate is much slower that a PLC that can retrieve usable data in one scan of the control program.

With this sorting conveyor example the first cost savings is reduced computer hardware by eliminating the PC with the database and the database software. A second savings is realized by eliminating the integration time required to get the PC and the PLC communicating. Another cost savings is from the lack of needing the Information Technology department to continuously maintain, backup and upgrade the PC.

There are many different applications that a PLC with an internal relational database can control in a more cost effective way for both the Integrator as well as the End User. Manufacturing machines and processes that assemble product based on recipes or build multiple products on the same machine are all good candidates for this technology. Also, projects that require setting “environment variables” for configuration of a machine or custom written instructions and drivers as well as fast keyed look ups for control values would find the power of a internal relational database especially useful.

Here it is, folks. Sony Ericsson's newly official XPERIA X2 in the flesh. It's got a flashy (gimmicky?) home screen, along with a view for "snacking" on bubbled-up information. Lots of buzzwords, but we'll need more time hands-on to know how we feel. The hardware? It's still a heavy beast, but perhaps just a bit more loving in this incarnation. We don't love the resistive touchscreen one bit. After a strong caveat that what we're looking at is preproduction software, a Sony Ericsson rep admitted that Windows Mobile 6.5 isn't all it could be -- though we're unsure why Sony Ericsson didn't throw a bit more hardware at the problem, Toshiba style. Still, the interface breaks down to stylus-friendly Windows Mobile-isms with just a few taps, and none of the "wow" of the floating Sony Ericsson home screen seemed to excuse any of the UI lag it introduces. Again, early software, but the X1 didn't exactly rise above its preproduction jankiness.

Well, the new S-Series is essentially a slam-dunk at this point with this uncovered listing of the device at materiel.net, a French-based entertainment retailer. The full specifications of the S-Series Walkman are an attractive update the series and confirms to our initial leak. The 8gb Sony NWZ-S544 (129 and 16gb Sony NWZ-S545 with a 16:9 (320 x 240, 262k colors) 2.4 inch QVGA LCD screen feature built-in stereo speakers on the front of the player to share or enjoy music out loud. Sony says 42 h Audio and 6.5 H Video battery life, but we all know that means at 128kbps music quality.

The player is drag n’ drop, which is nothing new for Sony but still great – it also boasts compatibility with iTunes and Windows Media Player as usual. FM radio (with 30 presets) strengthens the appeal and codec support includes mp3, WMA, and AAC. Video quality is up to 30fps and can play back the usual formats like H264/AVC, MP4 and WMV. Sony has also included voice recording with a built-in microphone. I’m almost wondering if they should add a microphone port and make a the future Minidisc hybrid. The earphones included with the new S-Series aren’t too hot, and we didn’t spot any mention of digital amplifier, clear bass and so forth but I’m sure Sony is just trying to offer a competitively priced music/video player with good functionality.

The price tag pretty much says it all about the retail package of LG KP500 Cookie. You can of course count on it that the essentials are covered, but the Cookie retail box just won't go any further.

The included handsfree is one piece, which means you're s(t)uck with the provided headphones. If you want to change them you will either need a set with the proprietary LG plug or a third-party adapter.

The retail package: nothing but the bare minimum

The other items in the box are a USB data cable and a DC charger. You also get a screen protector, the user manual and a mini CD with the software required for syncing your Cookie with a computer.

LG KP500 Cookie 360-degree spin

LG KP500 Cookie is one of the most compact touchscreens on the market. When talking touch phones, there is only a handful of devices to be as friendly in terms of size. The names that instantly come to mind are HTC Touch Diamond, Samsung F480 Tocco and Samsung Armani.

So, the Cookie will be easily squeezed in any pocket and it won't even bulge, as the handset is the nice 11.9 mm thick. And the first time you hold it in hand you'll be amazed by its weight - the mere 89 grams make it one of the lightest chaps around.

Design and construction

Simplicity must have been the first thing on their mind but it sure looks like the LG designers were having fun working on the KP500 Cookie. There's nothing to suggest simplicity was driven by frugality. The neat and cute handset projects a cheerful attitude and manages a lot more style and personality than the price tag suggests.

There's nothing fancy and frilly about the rubbery finish at the back but it adds to the solid feel and friendly charm of the phone. It's also quite practical and fingerprint-resistant.

Actually, the keys design is the only thing that differentiates the Orange exclusive LG KP501 from the LG KP500.

The rest of the front panel is taken by the 3" display, above which you'll notice the centrally placed earpiece and LG logo.

The volume rocker, the universal connectivity port and the lanyard eyelet are on the left. The connectivity port is covered by a small plastic lid to prevent it from filling up with dirt.

The right side is where the shutter key and the lock key are placed. Those are too tiny for our taste and a proper press is really hard at times. Press feedback is poor and the touchscreen lock key especially has a very low stroke.

The microSD card slot is also here, hidden under a small plastic lid. The handset had no trouble handling a 16GB microSD card, which is the largest currently available. This means the Cookie won't fail you in terms of storage space.

The top of LG KP500 Cookie is completely plain while the bottom hosts the mouthpiece and the stylus compartment. Peculiarly enough, the stylus goes in horizontally instead of vertically.

The back side of the handset is also far from crowded, the 3 megapixel camera lens getting all the attention. There is no flash of any kind to boost low light performance.

Opening the battery cover reveals the 900 mAh battery. In moderate use, it can keep the phone going for about two days, which is not exactly a great achievement. Frankly the quoted 350 hours of standby and 3 hours and 30 min of talk time had us fearing worse, but middling is probably what defines it best.

The build quality of the LG KP500 is better than its price tag. But what's more important, the Cookie has a distinct personality and wide-reaching appeal. Some will go for the neat and simple styling, while others will respond to the cheerful and friendly attitude. And all will appreciate the nice handling and solid feel.

Affordability does not rule out inspiration

Display is quite good

LG KP500 Cookie is equipped with a 3" 256K-color resistive touchscreen display of WQVGA resolution. Resistive screens do require more pressure (as opposed to capacitive ones) for a command to be registered. This may sound self explanatory, but one can easily feel and appreciate the difference between the Prada II we just reviewed and the Cookie. The Prada (like the iPhone, which uses the same touchscreen technology) was quick to respond to the lightest touch, which made the Cookie feel a bit clumsy at first.

Luckily, the screen of the Cookie is one of the most sensitive we've tried, so after a short while operating the phone became quite comfortable.

The touchscreen technology is otherwise the only difference between the Prada and the Cookie in the display department. 3" WQVGA screens are to be found in a number of LG touchscreens - from the first Prada, through the Viewty and F700 to the Renoir. Neither the size, nor the resolution is quite the cream of the crops at the high end. But they make perfect sense in the Cookie's price bracket.

Samsung's efforts to break the mobile phone market have been going swimmingly thus far; it's been a constant innovator and a leader in pushing the boat in terms of convergence.

So will the latest in its long line of flagship handsets, the Samsung Tocco Ultra Edition, live up to the hype of a massive advertising campaign and deliver a handset worthy of the top billing? Or will it be a damp squib in the year of exciting touchscreens releases?

Design

Designed to be the jewel in the Samsung mobile phone crown, the Tocco Ultra Edition is clearly specified up to its (virtual) eyeballs with the cream of mobile phone hardware. A 2.8-inch AMOLED touchscreen uses the latest in display technology, with the active matrix OLED giving brilliant colours and a deep contrast ratio, as well as being low on battery power.

The 8MP camera is the most detailed available at the moment, and incorporates a dual LED flash to help bring night pictures to life. Assisted GPS is included as well should you feel the need to geotag photos, or just get involved with some Google Maps fun.

The overall feel of the device, clad mostly in grey but with a stripe of red down the side (as well as the keypad) is an odd combination but works very well, giving the handset a refined and stylish look.

The mark of a good phone often comes from the feel in the hand (the iPhone excepted) and this handset is up there among the best. Although it has a brushed aluminium front framing the touchscreen and a plastic back, it feels solid and weighty in the hand and fits nicely when slid up or down.

However, the sliding action, especially one handed, is a little bit uncomfortable, especially when the ergonomics dictate that you must press the display to slide up the phone by placing a digit on the touchscreen - it took a long time to get used to not accidentally activating an application on the screen, and even after some familiarity it wasn't easy to avoid.

These feel fairly poorly positioned, as apart from the volume up and down buttons the others all require you to move the phone in your hand significantly to access them. The lock key in particular is frustrating, as it requires a long press to re-activate the screen.

The Samsung M8800 Pixon uses the same OS and button system and only requires a short press - you can see why a longer press is more likely to keep the phone from activating in your pocket, but given the amount of times it is used in your hand it's particularly annoying. We found it easier to simply activate auto lock in the settings, meaning that you only have to slide the phone up and down to unlock.

The front three keys, call / terminate and a back button, are well-placed; however we can't help but feel that the central key, which is in the middle of a small diamond frame, should have been a direction key as well allowing navigation around the screen, but it still feels nice under the thumb.

LG Viewty Smart (GC900)

LG Viewty Smart GC900 is finally official

The second Viewty phone, called LG Viewty Smart or LG GC900, is finally official, after several leaks and last week’s accident that brought us press photos with the handset.

Now LG officially announced the GC900 as the successor of the original Viewty, which, according to the South Korean company, was sold in more than 6.5 million units worldwide.

As you probably know, LG Viewty Smart has an 8 Megapixel autofocus camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens. LG blessed the phone with an Intelligent Shot Mode which automatically analyses scenes and lighting conditions in order to adjust the camera settings. The company says that this mode “completely eliminates the need to check settings before taking a photo.”

The 8MP camera also features: sensitivity up to ISO 1600, Multi-Face Detection, Touch Shot, Panorama Shot, Beauty Shot, Art Shot, Continuous Shot, DVD-quality D1 video recording and LED flash – yes, there’s no Xenon flash in the second-generation Viewty, although the first has it.

Welcome the newly confirmed Nokia N900. Since being rumored at the Open Source In Mobile conference last year, the Nokia N900 has received little attention untill now. In this post, I will cover the specs and release date of Nokia’s newest mobile phone. Additionally, on the bottom left of the post is a leaked image of the Nokia N900 that I found on engadget’s website earlier today.

The newer N900 is very similar to Nokia’s N97 and N810. Physically the N900 looks very similar in shape and design to the N97. Both have a nice 3.5 inch touchscreen and slide out QWERTY keyboard. However, the N900 has a much higher resolution, being 800×480 verses 360×640. Furthermore, the N900 will have an acceloerometer and is going to come in either 32GB or 48GB storage sizes. Samsung's Mondi is a WiMax and Wi-Fi MID that uses Samsung's TouchWiz UI on the Windows Mobile 6.1 platform. The device has 4.3-inch screen and slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and comes with Opera 9.5. Looks OQO-ey!

The Mondi has 4-gigabytes of internal storage, GPS, Push email, a 3-megapixel camera (w/ video support), Bluetooth 2.1 and HDMI out. It supports various video and audio codecs, plus an assortment of instant messaging platforms. Despite having a microphone, voice is not supported on the device, so VoIP or cellular calls are out of the question. However, MMS is available.

I didn't have tons time to play with the Mondi, but the build quality seemed pretty high, and the device was lighter than I expected it to feel. The screen had a bright, crisp look to it, and was reasonably responsive when the TouchWiz UI was present. The Keyboard was laid out nicely, so you could distinguish each key from each other and avoid typos. WinMo 6.1 starts to rear it's head once you get past the first UI layer, but the hardware was powerful enough that it ran pretty well.

The WiMax wasn't turned on (obviously), so I couldn't test that, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it performs in speed tests.

Nokia’s flagship product, the N97, almost hits all the right notes. Lets take a closer look and see if its all its set out to be.

Nokia packages the N97 nicely in small minimalist black box with everything other than the kitchen sink inside it. You get a wall and a car charger along with an adapter to use the older traditional Nokia charger instead of the new USB charger, a funky looking stylus, ear buds with a remote control, a USB cable to connect the phone to your computer, a quickstart manual and software dvds and a cleaning cloth.

The Size of the N97 is excellent as far as height and width is concerned although it is a bit on the chubby side which might make it bulge a little out of your pocket but is comfortable to hold. Available in Black and White, we received the black unit and I must say that its a good looking phone. The full touch screen on the top is accompanied by the red and green keys which are also touch sensitive as well as the menu key. Above the touchscreen you have the front facing camera.

The right side has the volume keys along with the camera key while the left side features stereo speakers, the micro USB connector and the lock slider. The top of the phone allows you to plug in a 3.5mm jack and also features the power button. The back side has the usual Nokia slide down camera cover.

Holding the unit horizontally and sliding it reveals the keyboard. I like how the display tilts instead of staying flat- something I first saw on the HTC Touch PRO. It makes using the phone and reading whatever is on the screen a lot easier. On the down side, you are restricted to one angle- it would’ve been nice to have different levels of tilt.

The keyboard that is revealed under the screen is ok. The keys are a bit too flat for my liking but I can understand that this might be related more to the design of the handset. Also, I’m not too sure about the location of the space bar on the right side instead of the middle.

Obviously, the Touch Screen is one of the most important aspects of the N97 and works very much like the Nokia 5800 which could be a good and a bad thing at the same time. Instead of talking about the touch screen, here is a small video that would explain things a lot better.
